Maureen Whitemore, Cumbria’s Life’s regular interiors columnist, has been recognised as an expert in her field for over 40 years. In that time, she has taught interior design across the UK and in the US, Europe and South Africa, published books on soft furnishing and, throughout those four decades, designed and refurbished interiors for private clients and the hospitality sector across the north of England and beyond.
Whitemore & Thwaytes Interior Design is based in Penrith (on Lowther Street in the New Streets area of the town) where Maureen employs seven people in her showroom and workshop. The business offers clients everything from a roll of wallpaper or a few metres of fabric to a full interior design service. Pulling together a team of builders, crafts people and artisans, Maureen and her team specialise in project management, creating something unique without any worry for the client. All the making up and purchasing is run from her Penrith premises.
“We aim to make people feel comfortable and able to share their ideas,” says Maureen. “It is very much about creating the room or home that the client wants, not just our ideas. What I love about this approach is that I can work alongside the client to create a home they will really love – and we can have fun pulling it together too.”
Maureen has had a monthly column in Cumbria Life for a year now and is a brilliant advocate for striking design and beautiful craftsmanship, especially if it comes from in or around Cumbria.
“The Cumbria Life Home and Garden Show 2015 is an opportunity to mimic that same approach to celebrating the best of modern designers and makers,” says Maureen. “The enthusiasm from businesses is tremendous and we’re creating a wonderful showcase of talent and a great shop window for everyone taking part.”
